Funding equitable building electrification in the US:
How local governments are using federal funding to decarbonize buildings in underserved communities

While most building electrification policies so far have focused on new construction, more local governments and advocates are looking at how to electrify existing buildings. This is critical work so that everyone in our communities gets the health and safety benefits of decarbonization and so we can lower our emissions from buildings, which are the largest source of greenhouse gasses in North America. One of the biggest challenges is how to fund home retrofits for people with low and lower incomes and for people who rent their homes. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) other U.S. federal programs can provide funds and there are also many questions that come with these opportunities. What are some examples of what local governments are already doing and planning? How did they decide on those projects and how did different stakeholders shape those decisions? How did local government leaders determine which federal dollars to go after? What do they advise those who are just beginning this process?
